An isolated natural sanctuary threatened by plastic pollution
Led by Plastic Odyssey, The 2025 Aldabra Atoll Expedition takes place from October 8 to 20, 2025 (reconnaissance mission).
In the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles atoll of Aldabra is one of the planet’s last virtually untouched sanctuaries, home to the world’s largest population of giant tortoises, in an environment still largely untouched by man.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Aldabra comprises four main coral reef islands, separated by narrow passes, surrounding a shallow lagoon fringed by dense mangroves and pristine white sand beaches.
A new chapter is opening for Plastic Odyssey as it joins forces with UNESCO on an unprecedented mission: to restore the marine World Heritage Sites most affected by plastic pollution. These sites are home to unique biodiversity and unexplored ecological heritage. Their increasing exposure to plastic pollution makes them a priority for action.
In 2025, Plastic Odyssey sets sail for a reconnaissance mission on Aldabra, an isolated UNESCO-listed atoll, home to the world’s largest population of giant tortoises and rich in marine biodiversity. More than 500 tonnes of plastic litter its beaches, threatening nesting and coral reefs.
